About 25 years ago, the human medical world was largely focused on the rising occurrence of CFIDS (Chronic Fatigue Immune Deficiency Syndrome) as well as EBV (Epstein Barr Virus), one of the main contributing factors of CFIDS. For a long time it was not understood that CFIDS was largely due to an immune system issue. During years of research, it was noted that as stress levels went up and adequate nutritional support went down, the evidence of CFIDS and EBV rose.
It was discovered that patients displaying symptoms of EBV and/or CFIDS had another set of symptoms occurring gastro-intestinally, nicknamed LGS or “leaky gut syndrome.” LGS occurs when there are tiny holes within the intestinal wall which throws off the delicate balance of the ‘gut flora’. This severely affected the patients’ innate nutritional support system. The immune system begins in the intestinal tract and if it is compromised then the immune system itself will be dysfunctional as well. Correction begins with a nutrient-dense diet and appropriate supplementation to balance the endocrine and hormonal systems followed by rebalancing the flora within the gut.
